Apprentice Emma is a cut above

Hairdressing apprentice Becka Steele, who works at the Manda Louise hairdressers in Stoke on Trent, has impressed her employer through her hard work, dedication and enthusiasm. Becka, 18, has been working at the salon for 18 months and is now proficient in many of the tasks that fully trained hairdressers need to know.

Hairdressing apprentice Becky is trimming away the competition

Charlie Brown, owner of Charlie Brown’s hairdressers in Stoke-on-Trent, was keen to give other hairdressing students the chance to gain experience in a salon after starting out as an apprentice herself. She was so impressed with one of her apprentices, Becky Percival, that she has put her forward in The Sentinel Business Awards in the Young Apprentice of the Year category sponsored by Stoke-on-Trent College.

Jobs created at 100-bed Premier Inn hotel

Plans for a £7 million Stoke on Trent hotel complex could create more than 50 jobs. The proposed 100-bedroom hotel and restaurant development in Hanley has been put forward by hotel-chain Premier Inn who wants to build a four-storey hotel built alongside a 190-cover Brewers Fayre restaurant.

Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire £543k tourism boost

New plans to attract millions more visitors to Staffordshire will see 220 businesses get expert advice and tourist attractions marketed throughout Britain. £543,000 of European funding will be used to boost tourism in Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire over the next two years and the region’s councils will double the amount with their investments.

Awards support charities

Campaign by traders to keep their advertising boards

Businesses based in Stoke-on-Trent city centre are fighting to keep advertising boards outside of their stores without being charged. The shops have started a petition after the council reacted to complaints from shoppers about cluttered streets. The petition has been organized by David Hawkins, owner Cannonball Records, after the council revealed plans to charge traders to display their A-boards or products.

Jake continues to improve

Rising star on the motor racing circuit Jake Dalton is continuing to impress despite having to deal with some setbacks in the testing stage. He suffered some mishaps including a blown engine after setting the time for the fastest lap in Silverstone and a 100 mph crash at Donnington. Luckily, the crash only created a dent in his budget and no one was injured.
