A group of walkers were not prepared to hang up their boots when Lottery funding for their club came to an end.
Swansea’s Mentro Allan group was due to be closed down after four years when funding came to an end, but members have decided to take it over and keep it running.
The club was one of 14 projects in Wales that were set up four years ago to help people who needed to get more exercise and become more active. The Swansea group targeted carers.
Mentro Allen members have walked thousands of miles between them over the years and taken part in Nordic walking, cycling and other activities.
The group has now secured help from Swansea Council to keep going and members have been given training in fundraising and bookkeeping to allow them to run the club successfully.
Mentro Allan co-ordinator Steve Lancey said: “The scheme has been rewarding both mentally and physically for the carers and has helped to boost morale.
“With the support of Swansea Council we have been able to deliver continued weekly activities for carers in Swansea and we are delighted that a group of these carers have decided to carry on the good work.
“It’s something that shouldn’t stop just because the outside support has ended.”
Activities that will continue to be run by the carer volunteers are: Wednesday activity group, cycling, chair based exercises, Nordic walking, pilates and a monthly Gower activity day. There is also a new Nordic walking event every Thursday at Parc Llewellyn.
