You’re probably aware by now that you are no longer required to display a tax disc in your car.
The law change on October 1 means you still pay car tax, but this will not come with the perforated circular piece of proof to sit in your vehicle windscreen.
What you may not be aware of is how valuable your old disc could actually be! According to a report in The Independent newspaper, there is such a thing as a tax disc collector (or velologist) who may be willing to pay a reasonable sum of money for your disc in the future.
It might not be worth a lot now, but if you hold onto your old disc, it is reportedly possible to get up to £1,000 for it. The discs are printed onto special perforated paper and as they become more rare, they will increase in value.
The BBC also shared some facts about tax discs this week. Did you know, for example, that the first discs were printed in 1921 and would have cost around £6? The perforated edges of the tax discs had to be suspended in 1942 after bombs damaged the perforating equipment.
The new law means you shouldn’t need to apply for a tax refund if you no longer have your car – the money should be sent to you automatically by the DVLA. Tax can no longer transfer with the car so when you buy a vehicle, you will be responsible for getting it taxed straight away.
Am I the only person who feels a little bit uneasy about taking my tax disc out of my car just yet? I have read all about the law change, but it still doesn’t seem right not to have it there in my windscreen! I think I will just leave it there for a few more days!
