Did you experience the best years of your life so far in a haze of boot-cut cords, velvet blazers and having a constant argument over whether Blur or Oasis were better (Blur were, just to set the record straight)?
If you fit the above profile then it’s fair to guess you were in your teens or 20s during the mid-1990s, when Britpop took over the world along with skinny-tees and Trainspotting.
That was two decades ago, and those of us who lived and breathed the era can often be found having nostalgic conversations about belly-button piercing, drinking warm lager out of plastic cups and loving everything about the music of the time.
And on Friday June 12 those of us who still haven’t quite got over the loss of the Britpop years will be able to relive their long-lost youth with a one-off return of the hallowed show that was TFI Friday.
Fronted by a slightly paunchier, slightly less naturally ginger Chris Evans, the special 20th anniversary show will host Liam Gallagher, Blur, The Stone Roses, Ian Broudie and Roger Daltry and will include contributions from the show’s much-loved producer Will and writer Danny Baker.
You can picture the scene now, we will be a set of middle-aged, greying parents crowding round the TV set to relive our youth. The following day we will probably download some ‘90s music onto our phones and think about trying to squeeze back into those cords which we never had the heart to chuck out (bad idea folks). Our kids will be despairing, we will be buzzing; reliving the anarchy of our youth, recalling the time when Shaun Ryder swore so repeatedly on the live show that it was pre-recorded from that point on.
So two big requests please Channel 4:
1. Please make it as brilliant as we fondly remember so we are not shattered by disappointment over this broadcast for the next 20 years.
2. If it is brilliant, please bring it back properly. We could all do with drinking regularly from the cup of youth on a Friday night before we fall asleep on the sofa.
TFI Friday 20th Anniversary Special will be broadcast on Channel 4 on Friday June 12 at 9pm.
