The Great British Barbecue

Come on, admit it, you had a barbecue at the weekend didn’t you?

Us Britons just love it don’t we? The sun shines a tiny bit and we all race to the supermarkets, clear the shelves of BBQ coals, salad and the biggest selection of marinated meats we can carry before heading to our gardens to burn and then eat it all.

The smell (and smoke) of barbecues filled the air at the weekend as we all revelled in the chance to do a bit of alfresco cooking and dining.

Washing was hastily brought in from the lines as the smoke from cremated sausages and burgers floated from fence to fence throughout the country. As is tradition, aprons and cooking responsibilities were passed from women to men and cups of tea were swapped for beers, gin and tonics and other summer-friendly alcoholic beverages.

Then we all woke up on Monday morning with slightly unhappy stomachs from eating more meat in two days then we would normally eat in an entire year – meat that was probably not quite cooked to perfection in many cases as well!!

Social media was filled with stories and pictures of the weekend’s barbecuing fun, the fridges were filled with the leftover cold sausages and limp salads and the streets were filled with over-pink faces from too much time in the sun.

It’s a great tradition and one of the things that makes Britain, well, British. I’m looking forward to the next sunny weekend so we can uncover the barbie and garden furniture and do it all again.
