If like me you have enjoyed watching the rises and falls of this year’s Great British Bake Off you will be looking forward to tonight’s final.
The all-male final will see the three remaining bakers: Brendan, James and John, battle it out trying to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry.
We have a soft spot for Brendan in our house, although judge Hollywood rather annoyingly keeps accusing him of being stuck in the 70s and is unnecessarily harsh on him we feel. Brendan’s downfall may be being too seamless and prepared. To us he never fails to impress though.
What seems to be a wing and a prayer approach by contestant James makes great viewing. When, on his 21st birthday, he and the other contestants were asked to “take the normal gingerbread house to another level” by GBBO presenter Mel Giedroyc, he set about building a gingerbread barn. However, he found his planned barn impossible to build and improvised by creating a derelict barn, complete with caramel cobwebs. It looked superb and helped him win the star baker accolade that week. Brendan’s perfectly executed, if slightly twee, gingerbread Disney birdhouse was just too much for the judges, complete as it was with fondant bluebirds wearing mascara. Bless Brendan.
We must not forget the underdog John: the one responsible for the bloody hand on our screens when he had an accident in the GBBO kitchen, and the one who is riddled with self doubt. However, he has brought us some real treats – such as the gingerbread Coliseum. It will have to be his finest hour for him to win tonight, but you never know.
I am going to stick with Brendan for the win though. He has consistently delivered on all baking challenges and a win for him would be so well deserved and not arrived at by the seat-of-the-pants style of James or the reticence of John.
We just love this programme and will be sad when it’s over.
