Millions of people around the world watched as daredevil skydiver Felix Baumgartner completed the highest and fastest space jump ever on Sunday. We were all tuned in last week when he was scheduled to do his skydive from 24 miles above the Earth’s surface and were disappointed when it was postponed due to the weather conditions.
Well, it was worth waiting for. The 43-year-old was seen by eight million on YouTube alone as he became the first skydiver to break the sound barrier, falling towards the ground at speeds of up to 834mph.
It was a heart-stopping 10 minutes as Felix jumped from a height that no man has ever jumped before. I felt for his family and wonder what their real thoughts were about the whole thing. There were moments when I think everyone could have been forgiven for fearing the worst, as he span out of control. Thankfully, he managed to stabilise himself and regain control.
There has been so much in the press about this extraordinary skydive: the stunt’s sponsor Red Bull must be energised beyond the capabilities of their own product at its success and coverage.
I am just in complete awe of such a stunt. Perhaps Felix would make a good replacement for Daniel Craig as Bond – the latest Bond film is, after all, ‘Skyfall’.
I had to laugh today when I saw the headline: ‘Death-defying skydiver Felix Baumgartner ready to take his biggest leap yet… marrying his girlfriend’. Yes, you guessed it: Mail Online. Well, she is a 26-year-old former model. Perhaps the Mail has a point.
