Wow! What a tennis match between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer last night in the World Tour Final.
It was great to see the world No1 and No2 battle it out in the Final and it took just short of two and a quarter hours for Djokovic to win 7-6, 7-5 to take the ATP World Tour Finals title. Apparently it was only the fourth time since the start of the season-ending format in 1970 that the world’s top two ranked players have contested the title.
It was an incredible two sets of tennis and while Federer started better, it was Djokovic who overcame a slow start to prevail.
Each point delivered thrills and while I was urging the match to go to a third set – and Federer was so close to this, Djokovic was a worthy winner.
It has been a superb year for tennis and all is looking good for 2013. We just need Rafael Nadal back to full fitness and then the top four can provide us with plenty more exciting tennis action. Those that questioned Federer will hopefully be convinced by his form last night that he still has plenty left in the tank. He is class and there is no-one I would rather watch on the tennis court.
While Britain goes reality TV mad it was so good to be treated to such a closely-contested, class tennis match. It was a blissful evening in front of the television compared to the usual offerings nowadays.
