10 a day? No way

For years I have tried religiously to eat five portions of fruit and veg a day (with varying levels of success), so I nearly fell off my chair when I read that we are now being encouraged to eat 10 portions!

Don’t get me wrong, I like fruit and vegetables, but how on earth am I going to eat 10 portions a day? First of all, I don’t eat that much food in one day. To eat 10 portions would mean two at breakfast, dinner and tea and then two more for morning snacks and two more for afternoon snacks…a person would never stop eating!

Secondly, without being too crude, I am pretty sure my constitution would struggle with that much fruit and veg and I would spend a good proportion of my day sitting on the toilet – whilst munching away on yet another portion of fruit!!

For an average family of four, that would also mean buying 40 portions of fruit and veg every day – costing a small fortune.

The latest advice has come from scientists at Imperial College London, whose study shows 7.8 million premature deaths could be prevented each year if we stuck to the suggested eating habits.

Scientists say eating lots of fruit and veg could reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, cardiovascular disease and cancer by significant amounts.

This study has definitely inspired me to be a bit healthier with my snack choices but I’m pretty sure I won’t managed 10 a day…
