Sergio Garcia finally broke his Majors hoodoo with a sensational victory at The Masters at the weekend.
It was the 74th Major of a career spanning 18 years, and despite 22 top ten finishes during his glittering time playing golf, the 37-year-old had never won one of the sport’s biggest prizes.
Widely seen as a choker, it was difficult to see him overcoming Justin Rose once the tournament reached a playoff, with Rose having won a Major in 2013.
There were lots of doubts over how emotional he gets during tournaments, but it is widely said that his future wife is having a big impact in terms of keeping these emotions in check while he is playing, and keeping him calm.
He certainly managed his emotions at the weekend, and now he is the proud owner of a Green Jacket.
He is definitely a popular winner, having been at the top of his game for nearly two decades.
To add to the script, it would have been his idol Seve Ballesteros’s 60th birthday on Sunday.
Garcia becomes the third Spaniard after Seve and Jose Maria Olazabal to win a Major, and you have to say that he has deserved it.
It would have been a travesty had he done a Colin Montgomery and gone through his entire career without one Major success notched up.
It is always amazing to hear how people keep their cool under such intense pressure. I cannot imagine what was running through his mind going into that final playoff against a player with the class of Justin Rose.
He said that he has never felt so calm at Augusta as he did this year, and that clearly shone through in his performances.
Nobody can ever take this success away from him, so it is such a delight that Garcia has finally fulfilled his potential and won a Major.
