Pay a large amount of money for a beautiful set of baby clothes and a stunning birthday cake – mix the two together with the added ingredients of a one-year-old and a photographer, sit back and record what happens.
This lovely little recipe is the latest craze (started in the US of course) to hit the world of parenting. Oh, and the whole experience is likely to set you back around £800!
The cake smash is a new and increasingly popular way for parents to celebrate their child’s first birthday. Baby is dressed in the cute outfit and the lovely cake – ideally with lots of colourful icing on – is placed in front of them. The child is then encouraged to bash the cake with their hands or a wooden spoon and cover themselves in as much icing as they can while a professional photographer captures it all. The photo session then extends to the inevitable bubble bath time that follows.
A discussion on UK parenting website mumsnet suggests that the UK is not quite so sold on the idea as America, with many parents describing it as a waste of money and food.
Advocates of the cake smash, however, say you can’t pay a price for memories and this is a way of capturing a wonderful moment and memory in their child’s life. That’s the bit I don’t understand. How is this ‘moment’ a precious memory when it is just a photo shoot that you have set up? It all sounds very staged and superficial to me.
Mind you, whoever came up with this as an idea for making money was a true genius!
