As part of the Prime Minister’s Challenge on Dementia, a summit is being held today, Wednesday October 11th, at the QEII Conference Centre, Westminster.
Global leaders are attending the event, which will showcase the UK’s world-leading research facilities and look at how to drive forward global work against dementia.
This is a welcome event. Up to 115 million people worldwide are due to be affected by dementia by the year 2050 – to include a possible 1.7 million here in the UK.
Director of the UK’s leading dementia research charity, Research at Alzheimer’s Research UK, Dr Eric Karran, said: “The UK boasts some of the world’s leading dementia research scientists, and we need to match that brain power with the right environment for research to thrive.
“As the number of people in the UK living with dementia spirals towards a million, charities, government and industry must join forces to ensure that research successes are translated into patient benefits. This event provides a platform to demonstrate the unique research opportunities provided by the NHS, our leading academic centres and flexible funding. A thriving research sector is our only hope for defeating dementia.”
The scale of the challenge of dementia is clear: today in England 670,000 people are living with dementia – a number that is expected to increase with one in three set to develop dementia in the future. The economic cost of dementia is £19 billion a year, which is more than cancer, stroke and heart disease combined.
Most of us are affected by dementia and it can have a massive and devastating impact on individuals and families. As the population ages the health challenge will only grow. A strong combined and collaborative worldwide focus and effort on finding effective treatments is to be encouraged and applauded.
Let’s all hope for good outcomes from today’s summit: pooling resources, expertise and working together, could take us closer to making a difference to all our lives.

I’ve been browsing on-line more than 3 hours today, yet I by no means discovered any fascinating article like yours. It’s lovely value sufficient for me. Personally, if all website owners and bloggers made good content as you probably did, the net will probably be a lot more helpful than ever before.
