A new scientific study suggests the scent of your partner’s dirty clothes or shoes could be a good cure for stress!
Forget about your herbal teas, a bit of yoga, a bath with candles, a glass of wine or some meditation – you can now enjoy sniffing a worn t-shirt to relax after a stressful day at work.
Researchers at the University of British Columbia discovered that women feel calmer after being exposed to their male partner’s scent. Conversely, being exposed to a stranger’s scent had the opposite effect and raised levels of the stress hormone, cortisol.
Marlise Hofer, the study’s lead author, said: “Many people wear their partner’s shirt or sleep on their partner’s side of the bed when their partner is away, but may not realise why they engage in these behaviours.
“Our findings suggest that a partner’s scent alone, even without their physical presence, can be a powerful tool to help reduce stress.”
The researchers suggested that taking a partner’s dirty clothes with you when travelling away from home could be a good way of reducing stress levels.
I have to say, in my experience, having a partner’s smelly clothes lying around the house does nothing to reduce my stress levels thank you very much! And I certainly wouldn’t want to pack them in my suitcase on a trip away. Still, each to their own I suppose…
