No one likes the sight of roadkill splattered across the tarmac do they?
So I was fascinated to see a story this week highlighting some ingenious animal crossings being built across the world to stop this happening. 
One of my favourites is a turtle tunnel under railway tracks in Kobe, Japan, designed to help the turtles as they cross to reach the ocean in the summer.
Another fantastic animal crossings is a crab bridge built over a road in Christmas Island for the millions of red crabs that head to the ocean to lay their eggs every year.
Brilliant underpasses include a penguin tunnel under a road in New Zealand and a more ambitious elephant underpass in Kenya.
The Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony says on its Facebook page: “The blue penguins are happily taking to their new underpass – the first of its kind in New Zealand!
“This underpass helps provide safe passage for the penguins from the harbour to their nests across the busy road. With a little light at the end of the tunnel to guide the way, the little blues just waddle on through!”
There are also monkey net bridges, a squirrel bridge and even some dormouse wire crossings to help keep our wildlife safe.
There’s a road sign near me that warns of frogs crossing the road during certain times of the year, but quite frankly, there is not much you can do to avoid them when you are travelling at a steady speed with another vehicle behind you. So come on council, let’s have a frog tunnel built.
These inventions are such heart-warming examples of how humans and animals can live harmoniously side by side.
