How to survive Freshers’ week

Freshers’ week sounds like a lot of fun – partying, living away from home for the first time, and meeting lots of new people.  But for many, this introduction to university life can be a daunting one.

All sorts of concerns may be cropping up: What should I be wearing? How do I meet the right people? Will I fit in?

Of course, chances are, everyone else is feeling the same as you (it’s a cliché but it’s true) and by the end of the week (or fortnight) you will be having the time of your life.

There are plenty of top tips out there to get you started though:

The National Union of Students (NUS) suggests the obvious: check out the clubs. It says joining a club or society can be a great way to settle in and meet like-minded people. Clubs on offer usually range from political, spiritual, artistic, athletic, social, competitive and recreational to the absolute obscure.

The Guardian, meanwhile, has picked the brains of some fashion bloggers to give this year’s freshers a point in the right direction. Joseph Kent says males can’t go wrong with a “smart-casual” shirt and jeans combined with a useful rucksack. Aisling Megan also suggests jeans, shirt and slip-on shoes for girls, with an oversized bag.

You’ve probably already heard a few horror stories, but if you want some more, The Telegraph has dug out a few tales that might make you think again during your festivities. These include students eating live goldfish and falling off the top of buildings.

Don’t let that put you off though. The week is there for you to have fun (without things getting out of hand) meet people (over a few drinks but also maybe over a cup of tea in your accommodation) and just generally adjust to your exciting new life.
