It is the news that every child in the United Kingdom will be revelling at – there is a shortage of vegetables in Great Britain!
Parents might not be able to get those all-important greens for their kids at the moment due to problems with growing conditions in Europe.
For the salad-lovers among you, it’s disastrous news.
Courgettes, iceberg lettuce and spinach are in short supply because of bad harvests in Italy and Spain, which means supermarkets haven’t been able to buy them in as much as they normally would.
Because supply is so short, the price is sky-rocketing, so some supermarkets are simply choosing not to buy them in.
It’s a simple issue of supply and demand. The supply is short, so demand is increasing, which is why it is pushing the prices up.
I remember when I was a kid absolutely hating vegetables – they spoiled the meat, potatoes and Yorkshire pudding that I had on my plate! They were very much a chore, and only something I had to eat before I could move onto the dessert.
Of course, I got used to them and enjoyed them more as I got older, but if I would have told my younger self about this story 20 or so years ago, I’d be jumping around for joy!
Plus, this ‘crisis’ is only limited to a few vegetables. If you can’t have a salad for a few weeks, then surely it isn’t the end of the world?
Mind, as a meat-eater, it probably doesn’t affect me as much as it would a vegetarian.
And it is important for us all to make sure we’re eating healthily, so if your favourite veg isn’t in store then it may have a bit of an effect on your health.
Still, at least kids can revel in the lack of veg for a while!
