Man can fly – it’s official.
A new Guinness World Record has been set for the furthest distance travelled by hoverboard.
An official video clip online shows Canadian Catalin Alexandru Duru ‘flying’ 905 ft and two inches across Lake Ouareau in Quebec.
His attempt looks effortless as he drifts across the lake, five metres high. His prototype machine, which he designed and made himself, sounds like a giant killer fly as it buzzes through the sky and carried him successfully across a distance five times the previous world record.
Catalin told the Guinness World Records: “I wanted to showcase that a stable flight can be achieved on a hoverboard and a human could stand and control with their feet.”
A Guinness World Records spokesperson added: “This is a truly mesmerising and incredible feat in the world of engineering and transportation.”
The invention uses propeller technology – a bit like a giant, super strong drone. In the past, scientists have tried to use magnetic-field technology to create hoverboards.
This is the closest we have ever been to the Marty McFly hoverboard as seen in the famous films Back to the Future. I have dreamed of the day I could ride a floating skateboard since watching those films in my youth. However, I fear by the time they become available to the general public, I will be getting a bit too old to start flying through the air; I haven’t even mastered the art of standing on a normal skateboard yet without falling off.
I can’t imagine what the streets would look like if these hoverboards take off (get it!) in the future.
