“Deck the halls with boughs of holly …fa la la la la, la la la la”
What do you mean, you’re not ready for Christmas? It’s less than two months until Santa arrives. Time to push other commitments to one side, head for the supermarket and stock up ready for the big day.
That’s what our shops want, of course. If feels like they have excelled themselves this year by pushing Christmas into our minds extra early.
While Halloween costumes were still on sale, boxes of mince pies started to appear in prominent positions. Tins of chocolates were filling whole shelves; toiletry gift sets were pushing into personal grooming.
Of course it’s tough for the Big Four supermarkets just now, as they’re being squeezed by the cheap and cheerful discount retailers. But they’re not going to get any more of my money by banging on about the festive season before we’ve been to a bonfire.
Even with six kids, an extended family of over a hundred and the whole street popping in for a mulled wine, there is no need to lift a finger for Christmas until 1st December at the earliest.
These days Christmas shopping really is a doddle for us lazy types. Late night opening means you can avoid the crowds. Don’t feel like stepping out into the wet and cold? The internet can take care of all your food and present needs – at a click. Right up to the week before the family descend.
So, get outdoors and enjoy the wonderful autumn season, instead of fretting over what to buy auntie Joyce this year, or whether to try goose for a change.
