New season – new hope?

Another football season has begun and with that comes renewed hope.
It is a funny time of year for the standard football fan.
I have just about got over England’s remarkable run in the World Cup and no sooner has that happened then the new season is about to get underway.
Not that I’m complaining. The ups and downs of 10 months of action is about to commence and the possibilities of what may be about to come is oozing through every football fan at the moment.
For nobody is that notion more pertinent than for Leeds United fans at the moment after a magnificent 3-1 victory over Stoke City on the opening day of the season.
There was a huge amount of uncertainty over the Elland Road club at the start of this season. With yet another new manager at the helm, it was difficult to see what he could eke out of a squad that fell away miserably to finish in mid-table in 2017-18.
But the manner of the win over the Potters was so high in intensity and attacking intent that a feel-good atmosphere now reigns over West Yorkshire.
Fans have a sense of realism though. Leeds started last season exceptionally well before they capitulated and dropped down the table like a lead balloon after Christmas. The same could yet happen this season but let’s be optimistic for now.
The Premier League season starts this weekend. Liverpool look set to be the main competitors to Manchester City’s dominance of last season but it would be foolhardy to rule out the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.
Being a Leeds fan, the Premier League doesn’t have as much of a lure for me as it does for others. However, playing the Fantasy League means that I have a vested interest in certain individual players performing better than others so that I can finish as high up in my table as possible and win bragging rights over my mates.
The return of Soccer Saturday is also something I massively enjoy. You can’t beat a Saturday afternoon with Jeff Stelling and the gang.
Welcome back football, we’ve missed you!
