New washer-dryer tap from Dyson yours for just £1,000!

I admit to loving my Dyson vacuum cleaner, but perhaps I won’t be investing in the latest Dyson product: a tap that both washes and dries your hands. 

While I find it an exciting prospect, the £1,000 price tag for this washer-dryer tap means I won’t be purchasing any time soon.

I have to admire Dyson for its innovation and it does sound fab: and is also a much more hygienic way of washing and drying your hands.

The new Dyson tap uses infrared to discover where your hands are and then releases water from the main stem.  Then, there are two branches coming off the main stem which have air outlets.  These blast very fast moving sheets of cold air over hands, drying them at super speeds.

A review on the tech website Wired says that the best thing about the tap was that washing and drying of your hands is performed over the sink, which avoids the problem of water dropping or blowing on to the floor.  Dyson says that the wash-dry tap will get your hands dry in about 12 seconds.

Other new Dyson devices include the Airblade V Dryer: a smaller version (60% smaller) of the space age hand dryers that you find in corporate toilets.  These also weigh less as they are constructed of polycarbonate.

The new Dyson devices use the new V4 ‘brushless’ motor: this accelerates from 0 – 90,000 revs per minute in under a second. It uses digital pulse technology for this and can move about 162,000 cubic metres of air in its useful life: that’s enough air to inflate over 25 million normal-sized balloons.  It cost £26.9m to create the technology, and, understandably, Dyson has 110 patents on it, and another 100 pending!

Also, apparently the hand dryers use a thing known as a high-efficiency particulate (HEPA) filter.  This eradicates 99.9% of the bacteria that is found in the air in a bathroom – before the air ever reaches your hands.  Therefore, it is super hygienic.

I still find the £1,000 price tag a struggle.  However, anyone wanting a real feature is sure to look at buying one.  Dyson says that the running costs of one of its devices are 15 times lower than the cost of replenishing paper towels.
