Whacky ideas and ingredients on MasterChef have been causing a bit of a stir.
It seems a contestant went too far when she tried to use sweet potato as a main ingredient for her chocolate mousse.
Other unusual ideas – such as a custard ravioli and ash – have also got viewers and judges a bit hot under the collar. Okay, so I do admit the ash one is going a bit too far!
Chef Richard Turner, of the Hawksmoor restaurants in London and Manchester, told the BBC: “Chefs constantly try to outdo each other with amazing new things and often they’re not focusing on cooking nice food. It can get a bit silly.”
Writer Cate Tyrrell was just one of the people who reacted to the chocolate mousse idea with horror on Twitter: “Who puts sweet potato in a chocolate mousse? That’s one hipster idea too far.”
She may have a point, but without trying it for myself, I’m reserving judgement. After all, there are plenty of strange food combinations and ideas that have turned out to be great –
- Chilli and chocolate (fab)
- Peanut butter and…well pretty much anything
- Bacon and maple syrup (of course)
- Beetroot and chocolate (never tried this one)
- Strawberries and balsamic vinegar
- Brussels with chesnuts, bacon and orange zest
My motto – don’t knock it until you try it.
