Raising a glass to an action-packed January

If you’re one of the many taking part in dry January this month you may find yourself twiddling your thumbs by the third alcohol-free weekend.

Having exhausted the usual options of cinema-going, sales shopping and visiting family and friends, why not turn the last couple of weekends into a doorstep holiday, a mini staycation if you will.

Wherever you live, there’s likely to be a wealth of attractions right on your doorstep which have so far been left untapped – here’s your chance to discover them!

Be it the must-see exhibition you’ve been promising yourself you’ll visit, the museum that’s been there for as long as you can remember without ever having stepped inside, the high-kicking new musical that everyone’s talking about or the new high adrenaline attraction down the road, use this time to pay them a call.

You could even go into pretend tourist overdrive, by searching for museums, galleries, where to eat out or see a show using www.cityvisitor.co.uk – you might discover something new which could become a favourite for years to come!

But if you decide you would actually prefer to head out of town, why not take a leg stretch and get a breath of invigorating January air by setting out on a winter walk. Even if you live in a big city there will be parks, canal paths or riversides you may have not yet discovered. Whatever your ability – be it using a pushchair, needing an accessible route or aspiring to be the next king of the hill – there’s bound to be something to whet your walking appetite just a short journey away.

And the best thing about going on a ramble? You can reward your endeavours with a hearty pub lunch – washed down with a soft drink of course!
