Sad news from the Palace

If like me you found one of the highlights of the Olympics opening ceremony was the James Bond sketch you will be saddened to hear that one of the Queen’s corgis that appeared in the film has died.

Buckingham Palace has said that Monty, one of three corgis who greeted actor Daniel Craig (007) in the short film, has died at the age of 13.  Monty previously belonged to the Queen Mother.

The Palace announced the death of Monty and also Cider, a dorgi, or dachshund-corgi cross-breed.

Monty can be sure his memory will live on in an iconic moment in Olympic history; in the short film featuring a stunt double of the Queen and Bond in a helicopter flying towards the Olympic stadium. Previously the dogs were seen running down the stairs and doing tummy rolls.

It was a stroke of genius to create this film and I am sure Monty enjoyed his part: we all did.

The corgi breed symbolises the Royal family.  The family’s ties with the breed date back to the time when George VI bought his first Pembroke corgi back in 1933.
