Scottish island is better than Greece

Who needs sunshine? In a new list of the most popular European holiday island destinations, Scotland’s Lewis and Harris comes in first place!

You might have expected the top spot to be taken by one of the Greek islands, where visitors can lie on white sandy beaches basking in the glow of the sun; but this island in the Outer Hebrides has more to offer, it seems.

The list was complied by TripAdvisor based on reviews from travellers. The travel site said: “A visit to Lewis and Harris is like stepping into the pages of a Scottish fairy tale.”

Scotland has always been known for its beauty, but its wet and dull climate is not one of its more popular points. However, attractions such as the Callanish Standing Stones and the Carloway Broch have helped to earn Lewis and Harris this new travel accolade.

In second place came Greek island Naxos, followed by Malta’s Island of Gozo in third position. Another Scottish island, Mainland, in the Orkney Islands, came in fourth place, named for its “serious Viking cred” as well as many other attractions.

Lewis and Harris has also come fifth place in a list of the top five islands in the world.

Official tourism website Visit Scotland is ecstatic at the news, saying: “Holding their own against balmy, continental climates and far-flung-tropical beaches, the fantastic performance of these Scottish islands is proof that you don’t have to travel far to find that perfect island escape. In fact, it could be right on your doorstep.”
