Silver surfers should just chillax

Just when you thought it was safe to relax into your comfy armchair with your slippers and laptop, the social media trends changed again.

I hate to sound old, but I struggle to keep up to date with it all at my age. I was feeling quite smug about the fact that I had embraced Facebook and Twitter and got to grips with how to use it and now I have found out that teenagers have moved on to new trends.

It appears ‘the young people’ are now favouring a whole range of new social media applications, including WhatsApp, WeChat, Kakao Talk, Instagram, Snapchat and others.

A spokesperson for Facebook said following its recent quarterly report: “We did see a decrease in daily users, specifically among younger teens.”

The older generation had only just caught up with the Facebook generation – although maybe that is the reason they have decided to move elsewhere!

After all, it’s not cool to wear the same clothes as your mum, or like the same music as your dad, so it stands to reason that today’s kids won’t want to do all their online socialising in the same place their parents, aunties, uncles and grandparents either.

So before all us ‘older’ internet users scrabble to keep up, maybe we should stop and think for a minute. Perhaps there should be areas on social media where the silver (and middle aged) surfers just don’t go. I mean, we wouldn’t hang around the street corner with them or chillax at the skateboarding park would we?
