If you weren’t convinced already that dogs are a man’s best friend, researchers have found another example of how they keep on giving.
Dog owners are apparently less likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease and other illnesses.
The study, published in Scientific Reports, says: “Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for 45% of all deaths in Europe in 2016. Dogs may be beneficial in reducing cardiovascular risk by providing a non-human form of social support and increasing physical activity.
“Dog ownership has been reported to be associated with alleviation of social isolation and improved perception of wellbeing, particularly in single persons and the elderly. A meta-analysis of eleven observational studies found that dog owners walked more and were more physically active than non-owners.
“A recent study showed that dog ownership also supports the maintenance of physical activity during poor weather.”
The research was carried out over a 12-year period, on over 3.4 million Swedish adults.
They don’t even ask for much in return do they? Just a ball to chase after, a few walks a day, some food and water and a cushion to sleep on. That can’t be any more time consuming or expensive that paying for gym membership and attempting to drive there at least three times a week to make it worthwhile! I know what I’d rather be doing!
