I know it’s wrong to laugh at any kind of crime, but I couldn’t help but snigger when I read that a cardboard cut-out of a policeman that was used as a supermarket crime prevention aid was stolen.
The life-size figure, known as PC Bobb, was being used at a Sainsbury’s Local in Shafton, Barnsley as a way to deter shoplifters. The crime prevention tool has been used in shop windows throughout Barnsley and the Police believe that the cut-outs make them more approachable, deter criminals and boost public confidence.
Greater Manchester Police have said that the use of a cardboard policeman at an Asda in Leigh cut shoplifting in the store by 75%. However, a similar scheme in Essex had no positive effect as most of the cut-outs were stolen.
The thing that made me laugh the most about this story was the fact that the cardboard cut-out made an appearance at several house parties after it was stolen. I know that it is wrong to steal anything but it is pretty ironic that a crime prevention tool was pinched. I think it’s great that the Police are trying to think of some new ways to deter crimes but this scheme seems to be a bit silly to me. I suppose if it works then there’s no harm in trying, but I think most people are clever enough to know the difference between a real person and a cardboard cut-out!
