Like me you may have been listening to all the news surrounding the Jimmy Savile scandal and the many horrific tales of abuse and have been wondering just how nothing happened while he was alive. It seems people were aware of, or suspected, what was going on, but nothing was done to stop it.
Then there is the story of Amanda Todd in the news: the teenage cyber bullying victim from Canada who killed herself after being bullied online. Amanda uploaded a video to YouTube describing the years of bullying she endured that she said drove her to drugs and alcohol.
People must have turned a blind eye to “national treasure” Savile’s predatory behaviour and people must have known the pain and suffering being caused to Amanda Todd. All that can be hoped is that lessons are learnt, measures put in place to try and prevent such things happening again and the people responsible for allowing such behaviour to happen, in Savile’s case, and the bullies, in Amanda’s case, are exposed.
We can all play our part in keeping people safe from predators and bullies, by doing what we can to report anything that we deem unacceptable behaviour. I think we all know a bully or two; hopefully less so the predators, and it’s time they were stopped doing their harm.
