I was recently told, by a person the same age as me I might add, that I am too old to use the word ‘awesome’.
When questioned further on the subject, my accuser was able to list a whole host of words that I am no longer allowed to use due to my age (let’s just say I’m over 40 and leave it at that).
The list includes:
- Awesome
- Cool
- Wild
- Ace
- Chillax
- Dude
- Pants – when used to describe something that is a bit rubbish
It gets more complicated – I am, in fact, allowed to use these words in certain acceptable situations. For example, I would be permitted to say awesome if I was stood on the edge of the Grand Canyon, but not to describe a film I have just seen. Cool would be acceptable if I was talking about the weather, but not someone’s clothes. Ace would be allowed if I was talking about a playing card, but not to describe something great….you get the idea.
Am I the only person who doesn’t think we should be banned from using certain words just because we are past the age of 20?
The word awesome, for example, is used to describe something that inspires awe – something striking or impressive – it’s not a slang word.
The only one I agree with on the list is chillax, and that’s just because I don’t think anyone should be allowed to use this word!
