What’s Healthy?

I really cannot keep up with what’s good for you and what’s bad for you these days!

It seems that we are always being told conflicting information about what we should be eating, how we should be exercising and what we should be avoiding.

The latest research that confused me was about organic produce; apparently Stanford University has found that organic food is no safer or healthier than other produce. I’m not saying that I am devoted to buying organic but I cannot understand how something that is grown without chemicals or pesticides is no healthier than chemical laden food. It seems like common sense that naturally grown food would be better for you.

I never know what the latest news is about alcohol either; one day you can ward off disease by drinking two glasses of red wine every night and the next day you should avoid alcohol altogether.

I suppose that it’s all just scaremongering by the media who want to grab headlines. One of the most ridiculous recent headlines I saw was about how doing the housework could reduce the risk of breast cancer by 13%. It sounded to me like it had been written by a man who wanted to avoid doing the washing up! When I read the article I discovered that the finding was based on research about how exercise can reduce the chances of breast cancer, and housework is a form of exercise. The headline was a bit of a leap I think.

Maybe all that we can really do is ignore all these silly health stories and stick to what we know– everything in moderation and making sure we do some exercise.
