This discussion of how a girl should look and behave has been in the news for a number of reasons recently.
Rowan Hansen, an 11-year-old from Illinois, is reported to have written to DC Comics campaigning for more female superheroes. In response, a DC comics artist created a new superhero based on the girl herself!
More female superheroes sounds like a great idea to me. Whatever happened to Wonder Woman? Everyone loved Wonder Woman – males and females.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, parents of a three-year-old in the UK
decided to let her dress herself to demonstrate that not all little girls want to wear pink, princess dresses, frills, sparkles, glitter, and flowers. Superhero clothing and Star Wars tops have featured highly in the little girl’s resulting outfits.
Dad Simon Ragoonanan wrote on his blog Man vs Pink: “I think little girls should aspire to be more than just princesses, that pink doesn’t have to be the only colour they like, and that all toys are gender neutral toys.”
I recently heard a 10-year-old girl describe herself as a “tomboy”, her reasons being: “I don’t like wearing pink and I like playing sports, especially football”.
But what is a tomboy? An Oxford English Dictionary definition of this word is: “A girl who behaves like a spirited or boisterous boy; a wild romping girl; a hoyden.”
The recent This Girl Can campaign by Sport England addressed this issue with a series of films aimed at inspiring females to be more active and sporty – no matter how well they do it or what they look like.
The films were very well received and hopefully will no doubt inspire many females to get out there and be their own Wonder Women!
