Why do people risk crossing train tracks?

People crossing train tracks is one of the most ridiculous ways they can endanger their lives.

I have never understood why people do it and I never will.

A lot of this is children thinking that it’s cool to do it, and wanting to provide a rush to their lives. Another common reason is because some very lazy people can’t be bothered to keep themselves safe and walk a bit further to a designated crossing, so instead they go over dangerous train tracks to get home quicker.

Whichever way you look at it, there isn’t really an excuse for risking your life in such a ridiculous way.

There are so many stories out there about how people have had their lives changed because they tried crossing a train track.

I get similarly annoyed when people cross busy roads instead of using an overpass, underpass or designated crossing.

It is usually out of pure laziness that people do this, and I just can’t get my head around the motives – it just isn’t worth the risk.

More than 8,000 people trespassed on railways in 2016, which is the highest number on record.

Statistics show that 125 people died last year. Is this not reason enough to stop doing this?

The story of Simon Munn is a horrible but important one. He took a short cut across a train track and lost his leg because of it. While he is now representing Great Britain in wheelchair basketball in the Paralympics, he accepts that he was lucky not to lose his life.

It’s important to take these lessons and make sure that other people learn from them.

There are plenty of perils in life without putting yourself in the firing line simply to save you a bit of time in the short term. You have no idea how massively it can affect you in the long term.
