If you were in one of the world’s major cities at the weekend, you may have thought it was either the end of the world as we know it, or somehow Halloween had come early.
Stumbling morosely through the streets were thousands of “the undead” costumed and taking full advantage of gory prosthetics to celebrate World Zombie Day.
This macabre-looking celebration took place in London, New York, Pittsburgh, Paris, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Seattle, Tokyo and more than 50 cities across the world.
Whilst it sounds like just an excuse for a good dress-up, the event does have a more serious cause: as well as allowing zombie fans to celebrate their shared fascination with this culture, the day raises money and awareness of hunger and homelessness.
Alongside your average zombie, there were zombie Santas, zombie clowns, zombie brides and so on….even young children donned the fake blood and ripped clothes to join in.
These type of themed days have become a popular way to join together with like-minded people over a joint interest and it’s great if they manage to do some charitable good at the same time.
In fact, there are so many international days of… these days, you could probably fill an entire year’s calendar.
Some of my favourite weird and wonderful ones (according to the dedicated Days of the Year website) include: Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day, Count Your Buttons Day, Read in the Bathtub Day and Walk on Stilts Day – not to mention the many days dedicated to favourite foods such as chocolate covered peanuts, gummi worms and caviar!
