Stephenson Clarke Shipping Ltd, Britain’s oldest shipping company, has been liquidated due to the global economic crisis. The Newcastle based company was founded by brothers Ralph and Robert Clarke in 1730 at a time when the Tyne was renowned around the world for its coal trade. Sleeperz Hotels in Newcastle, part of a budget UK hotel chain, have been awarded a prize from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). It is the second architectural award that the company has won in the last three years. The hotel was built on the site of the former Parcel Works in the North East of Newcastle. The 98 bedroom property has been recognised for its architectural excellence and design at the RIBA Hadrian Awards.

Guests at one of the leading hotels in Newcastle will be taking a step further into the 21st century as their bedside Gideon’s Bible are being replaced by an electronic version of the text. All of the bibles at the Hotel Indigo have been replaced with a Kindle e-reader with a pre-loaded copy of the bible. The hotel is claiming that they are the first in the UK to offer this service.

Two North East based firms which specialise in farming, waste and recycling have secured £8m in funding for an anaerobic digestion facility that will be used to power electricity to power hundreds of homes. Emerald Biogas has been granted planning permission for the facility which will be based on a 20-acre site in County Durham. The facility will be capable of producing 1.4MW of electricity per annum from food and farm waste. By August 2013, it is hoped that the …
