Hotels stay green with soap service

A new innovative company is offering a range of luxurious, environmentally friendly bathroom toiletries for guest houses and hotels in Swansea, the rest of Wales and beyond.

The Myddfai Trading Company, which is based near Llandovery, delivers a supply of shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, hand wash and hand cream; but rather than throwing away the packaging, the company refills them. This makes the containers last longer and helps the environment.

When the bottles are damaged or can no longer be used, they will be collected and recycled by a recycling company.

Managing director of Myddfai Trading Company, Mike Hill, said: “The idea is to recycle and keep the bottles going.

“We noticed a gap in the market some three to four months ago.

“By sourcing local products it will help local businesses like ourselves become sustainable and offer us opportunities to provide employment. This is a unique idea in Wales, plenty of other people do it but we are based in Wales offering a Welsh product.

“We want people to pick up the Myddfai product and realise that it has come out of a small community and that they’re supporting a Welsh community.”

The company is already working with a number of outlets including The Castle Hotel in Llandovery.

Mr Hill said: “We hope to provide areas where other people can come and work — perhaps from a craft or even technical industry, through subletting units.

“It would be nice to have a community feel here, there’s scope for workshops and some form of educational learning on these premises.

“But if we do go into production there’s also room for us to expand.”

Hotel manager, Gareth Davies, said: “We are very happy to support a fellow local business. We were impressed by the quality and uniqueness of the toiletries and feel they would fit well into our recently refurbished rooms”

“It’s important people remember that we are a social enterprise. All of our profits go back into rural regeneration and which in turn helps the local community.”
