Too much information

Sometimes I have a feeling of too much information from the media.  Two recent stories demonstrate what I am talking about: ‘Mystery stomach aches could be caused by leaking water pipes’ and ‘How safe is air quality on commercial planes?’

These are two stories that I really wish I hadn’t seen. Unfortunately, as is human nature, once I have seen the headlines, I can’t stop myself reading on.

The mystery stomach aches story told us how viruses and bacteria from faeces can get into our water pipes when there is an underground leak. These horrors can be sucked into damaged pipes – causing dodgy tummies for anyone who drinks it.

Professor Joby Boxall told The Telegraph: “Many of us will have had a ‘dodgy tummy’ in the past that we couldn’t quite explain, often putting it down to something we’d eaten. It now seems possible that some of these illnesses could have been caused not by food, but by water.”

Meanwhile, the aeroplane air quality story told us how cabin crew staff are suing airlines because they believe the air in planes has been responsible for making them very ill.

The BBC report explained how some campaigners believe any faults in engine seals could lead to air contamination by engine oil, hydraulic fluids and other chemicals.

These are two issues I can do absolutely nothing about – unless I decide to drink only bottled water and never fly abroad again – so I think I would have rather not known about them.

With that thought in mind, I would like to apologise for sharing them with you!
