Breakfast like a King

From the earliest age we have it drummed into us that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Many of us however still give it a miss in favour of a few extra minutes in bed, and it’s certainly not seen as the most interesting meal of the day. There is, though, a new trend for eateries specialising in serving up hungry early birds with a speciality start to the day. Here are some of our favourites.

Gone are the days when the only option was to pop out to the local greasy spoon. Last year saw the opening of Cereal Killer Cafe, the UK’s first speciality Cereal Cafe. Selling over 120 different types of cereal from around the world, they claim to be able to make your perfect bowl of cereal. You can choose from 30 different varieties of milk and 20 different toppings.

Porridge is also making a comeback. If you need a little hair of the dog, look out for Stoats Porridge Bars in Edinburgh. They serve porridge several different ways, but it’s the whisky and honey combo that’ll really kick start your day. Further south, London’s first porridge café opened just a few weeks ago. Discover fusions of blueberry, ginger and cashew butter, or bacon, avocado and tomato.

If you’re feeling really hungry, head to the Corner Cafe in Portishead, Bristol. They have launched the Monster Mega Breakfast – an 8,000 calorie breakfast with too many ingredients to mention, washed down with a pint of milkshake or a can of energy drink. The café has a blackboard which lists the names of anyone that manages to actually finish the meal – needless to say it’s looking pretty empty!

Then there’s the option of eating your breakfast on top of a bus at Double Decker Café in St Leonards On Sea. You can have your boiled egg served wearing a wooly hat at Ginger & White in London, or Ottolenghi Islington serve their breakfasts on a long white communal dining table decked out with toast-your-own-toasters dangling from curly electric cables.

You see – breakfast doesn’t have to be dull. Get up, go out, and enjoy!
