Most of us have experienced hospital food at some point in our lives haven’t we – and it doesn’t usually get a good review.
A bit like aeroplane food, hospital grub doesn’t have a great reputation.
One hospital, however, has finally realised how improving its food services could actually go a long way towards helping patients recover faster.
It’s obvious really isn’t it – eating food you like is bound to help you feel better.
Kingston Hospital in south London has decided that a bit more comfort food and a bit less slop is what its patients need.
The idea is to offer food such as toast, home-made soup and omelettes – the type of food people would eat at home. Lots of finger food is also available to help those who have not got their full appetite back.
Healthy eating is still a consideration, but the new hospital food is also about just trying to get people eating and back to themselves.
Duncan Burton, director of nursing and patient experience at the hospital, explained: “You’re not going to change people’s eating habits when they are not feeling well.
“If you can get them to eat a piece of cake, then fine… at least it is some nutrition.”
The hospital has already reported to have seen a drop in cases of bed sores and ulcers since the new menu began. There has also been very little criticism of food from patients.
Well done Kingston Hospital…
