So, Conservative MP Nadine Dorries has left the country to appear on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here. Madness: on every level.
This is an MP who is paid to represent a constituency and should surely be in the Commons looking after the interests of the people who voted for her. Instead, she has chosen to join the other non-celebrities on a programme designed to humiliate participants through eating the most personal parts of a kangaroo on television and being smothered in insects – all in the name of reality television.
She apparently argues that more people watch and vote in reality shows than in many elections. If people are watching reality television then she thinks that’s where MPs should be too. So it’s nothing to do with seeking publicity for herself or her appearance fee then?
Wouldn’t she be better addressing why people have switched off to politics and are instead choosing to watch reality television. Perhaps the behaviour of MPs and the way our money is spent, and apparently so easily wasted, is an issue that needs addressing.
Many people have lost faith in politics and politicians and Nadine Dorries is a prime example of why. It seems she has been ‘suspended’ by the Tory party and will be spoken to when she gets back. No: just sack her. She has made her choice: she wants to be a celebrity. Well, good luck to her. If we could get rid of the over-inflated egos that seem to go hand-in-hand with politicians we may get somewhere.
To any hard-working politician out there: keep plugging away. We need you.
For now though my cry is “I’m a mere mortal – please Get Me Out of Here!”.
