Scientists have confirmed that the British weather over the past few months has been some of the “weirdest” weather since records began.
We had the driest spring for over a hundred years and then had the wettest April to June recorded. The scientists have said that there isn’t any evidence that the dramatic weather has been caused by man-made climate change, but what is going on?
The weather this year has been unpredictable to say the least; one week we’re hearing about hose pipe bans and the next week there are flood warnings! I can’t remember the last time that we had a summer that really felt like a proper summer, and now we seem to have skipped autumn and are heading straight for winter.
The Environment Agency have said that the traditional flooding season has changed from winter to summer but there is no long term trend so it is difficult to predict how the weather will be from season to season.
There is some hope though, as Sarah Jackson from the Met Office said, “Longer term we will see a trend to drier summers.” However, Jackson also said that they will inevitably still be “natural variability”.
Fingers crossed that this ‘summer’ was a one off and we might get some real sun in 2013. It’s a lose lose situation; we’re having rubbish summers and with the state of the economy none of us have any money to go on holiday to warmer climates!
