After eight years presenting the Radio 1 Breakfast Show, Chris Moyles has hung up his headphones and I would be lying if I said that I’m going to miss him.
I don’t hate him by any stretch but for me his presenting style got old very quickly and I stopped finding him funny a long time ago. I suppose it must be difficult keeping your feet on the ground when you are being paid a lot of money to talk about yourself for a few hours a day but I think that Moylesy’s ego had become so big that he just wasn’t entertaining anymore.
Nick Grimshaw started on Monday and I am already enjoying the change; it’s refreshing to listen to the radio in the morning and actually hear music! I think that he is a great choice for Moyles’ replacement; he is witty and quick but also seems to be in touch with the interests of his listeners. I am far too old to care about One Direction (although I do a little bit) but I can imagine that young girls up and down the country were thrilled to hear Grimmy chatting to Harry and Liam during his first few days at his new job.
Radio 1 seem to be finding it difficult winning a younger audience these days but I think that it’s because everything is so much more accessible now than it was years ago. I used to listen to the top 40 religiously and was genuinely crestfallen when the band I loved didn’t get to number one, but I doubt that teenagers these days could care less. They can download songs (legally and illegally) so quickly and watch their favourite music videos online or one of the scores of music channels. I don’t really know what the radio station can do to get young people interested in the radio again but I think that getting Grimmy on the breakfast show is a good start. I’m definitely on #Team Grimmy.
