Revealed: the most popular sarni is…

During your lifetime you are likely to eat an average of 18,000 sandwiches – costing you up to £48,000.

A survey by PR and research company Ginger Comms has looked into our obsession with two slices of bread and a filling and come up with some fun facts.

Top on the list of sandwich favourites is the long-standing BLT, followed by chicken and mayo in second place and bacon in third.

Others in the top 25 include the crisp butty, chip butty and of course my personal favourite – the fish finger sandwich (this one has to be prepared and assembled in a very precise way in my opinion).

An unusual peanut butter and jam makes it in at number 24 (I’ve never tried one of these) while the traditional and posh cucumber sandwich doesn’t get a mention – replace perhaps by more modern options such as pulled pork.

The survey also found that the best sandwich has to be cut diagonally and made with white bread with the crusts left on.

A spokesperson for Heinz Seriously Good Mayo said: “These findings show Brits are very particular when it comes to their sandwiches – without a doubt it’s still our go-to option for lunch.

“The fact that it’s so quick to make, cheap and you can pretty much have any filling you fancy makes it an obvious choice for school children, workers, busy mums and anyone on the go.”

I like a good mashed potato sarni myself – what’s your favourite?
