Hands up, who’s had beans on toast for tea in the last week?
This traditional British meal, along with a bowl of cereal, some hastily prepared pasta or even a handful of morsels from the biscuit tin, are all popular dinners in the UK according to a new survey.
With lives becoming busier and busier, it seems many of us do not have more than 30 minutes to prepare our evening meal and are resorting to the same handful of quick favourites to fill our tummies.
However, we are then happy to sit in front of the numerous popular cooking programmes to eat our hastily prepared snacks!
The survey, conducted by frozen food company Birds Eye, makes interesting reading. It shows that we each watch an average of 121 hours of food programmes every year and own nine recipe books, but still prefer a quick fix when it comes to feeding ourselves.
Other meal favourites appear to be jacket potatoes and a quick stir fry – those good old student favourites.
The main issue seems to be a lack of time to cook as well as a reluctance to have a lot of clearing up to do at the end of the working day.
Helen Martin, of Birds Eye, told The Guardian newspaper: “Foodie programmes and celebrity cook books are a national obsession, but many of us simply don’t have the time to try our hand at recreating delicious meals for ourselves at the end of a long working day.”
The problem is, these TV chefs make it look so easy with their ingredients already prepared and measured out, an invisible black hole for all the washing up to disappear into and their “here’s one I prepared earlier” examples. It’s never quite so ideal in my kitchen.
