One of the most stylish hotels in Newcastle, The Sandman Signature Hotel, has won the Large Hotel of the Year category at the prestigious North East England Tourism Awards.
The hotel is the first in the UK to be opened by the Sandman Hotel Group, one of Canada’s leading hospitality chains. The hotel managed to beat off competition from other popular hotels in the region.
The North East England Tourism Awards celebrate the achievements of venues, attractions, hotels and service providers with awards in 14 different categories. The multi-million pound hotel garnered praise from the judges for “its contribution to the visitor economy, the sense of home away from home which guests feel, care access, environmental awareness and national and international presence within the market during 2012 Olympics.”
The 170-bedroom four star hotel is located on the site of the former Scottish and Newcastle Brewery. It will now compete with other winners from up and down the UK for the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence in 2013.
General Manager Paul Smith said: “We are delighted to win this award, which recognises the part we have played in attracting leisure and corporate visitors to the region. The award acknowledges the hard work, commitment and pride which the staff and management have channeled into the hotel since the opening of the property.
“When we decided to expand our operation into the UK, Newcastle immediately struck us as an excellent location thanks to its great infrastructure and its place as the commercial and historical heart of the North of England.
“Our company has exciting plans for continued expansion within the UK which is refreshing in the current economic climate.
“We are now looking forward to representing the region nationally and showing the rest of the country what it has to offer.”
